Are you preparing for an endurance cycling event?

Maybe you want to have a go at your first bikepacking experience.

This trip is just the one for you…

Traverse Algarve Bikepacking Adventure: Complete the challenge whilst learning from the best!

We have created this bikepacking adventure to give budding endurance cyclists a chance to learn new tips and tricks, put their knowledge to the test and experience what riding day after day on gravel feels like. It is ideal for cyclists who want to try cycle touring but are not sure where to start. Or alternatively it’s perfect for cyclists that have signed up to an endurance event later in the year and want to give themselves a ‘trial run’ to hone their skills.

The bike holiday is the perfect mix of road and gravel. Technically it is not too difficult (most tracks are for 4×4 vehicles) but the off-road sections give the riders a chance to reach villages and other hidden gems inaccessible with a road bike.
You will carry your own luggage with you (self supported), staying in your tent for 4 out of the 6 nights. It is a guided cycling trip however, so you are not completely without our help and assistance. We will eat as together at the end of each day a group either at local restaurants giving you a chance to experience the best of Portuguese culture and gastronomy or in our camp whilst reliving the experiences of the day!

Who is this trip for?

This bikepacking adventure is for beginner to advanced level riders. You don’t need to have prior experience in bike packing. In fact it is our GOAL to teach you everything that we know during the week, so that you return home more confident and inspired to take on more long distance cycling challenges in the future!

There are no support vehicles on this trip, however you will have the company of our highly experienced guides who will be there to assist you if needed! The guides will be with you every pedal stroke of the way however we will encourage those who are ready to take on a few hours of cycling alone – it’s great practice for your self navigation, mental toughness and pace making!

Bikepacking Tour Itinerary

This trip consists of 2 travel days, 5 cycling days bikepacking and 6 nights. Scroll down look below at the itinerary below for a more detailed overview of the route and number of km each day!

Accommodation

There is a reason we have named this an adventure! For the first and last night you will be in a hotel, to prepare and aclimatise to the local area. For the middle 3 nights you will be sleeping in your tent. In fact, you might not even need a tent, if the weather is good. That’s called ‘bivvying’ (lost already? Don’t worry, you will learn everything from our highly experienced guides – that’s exactly why we have created this trip).

Cuisine

What would you do on am ultra long distance cycling race? Well this is what we will practice. Some days we will stop at cafes, sometimes at restaurants and sometimes will will stop at supermarkets and prepare food for the tent. You will be amazed at the incredible food it’s possible to create from your sleeping bag!

Gravel – what bike do I need?

This tour is designed specifically for gravel riding. We would highly recommend a gravel bike or a mountain bike. This Traverse Algarve bikepacking adventure is a mixture of small roads and gravel paths (usually 4×4 tracks) so having tyres that can stand up to that is paramount! We can hire gravel bikes for you – just get in touch.

Close to here you will pitch up for the night at a great camping spot chosen by our guides.

Silves – Benafim

The next day will take you into the heart of the Algarve and past the gorgeous Barragem de Funcho, north of Messines.

Benafim to Cortelha

Now for some truly memorable riding! The route today will take you along some spectacular ridge lines with views for miles in all directions. Finishing in the heart of the Serra de Caldeirão, famous for it’s cork oak forest and medronho (local firewater – a must-try!).

There are some fantastic local restaurants in this area too – well worth stopping at for either lunch or dinner.

Cortelha to Tavira

Another breathtaking day of riding as you traverse across towards the south east of the Algarve. We can guarantee you won’t forget the views as you descend towards the coast along some of Europe’s best gravel tracks.

Tavira to Loulé

Your final day will take you back into Loulé and back to the first hotel you stayed in. What luxury to be able to have a shower and bed at the end of a day of riding!
